Corporate Wellness Is the New Norm
These days it’s not just high-tech companies in Silicon Valley offering employee benefits. In 2015, the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) found over two-thirds of employers in the U.S. were offering wellness programs as part of their benefits packages.
This trend has not shown a decline – their updated 2018 survey shows 72% of organizations increased their benefits to retain employees and respond to employee feedback. In SHRM’s job satisfaction survey, 92% of employees said benefits were essential to their job satisfaction. Benefits are a significant part of employee retention strategy, as employees who are satisfied with their jobs are more likely to stay with a company long term.
Benefits also help attract new talent in a competitive economic climate with low unemployment rates. Millennials, or the younger generation who will make up 46% of the workforce by 2020, place a high value on work-life balance and seek a corporate culture in line with their own.
How Does A Wellness Program Improve Employee Retention?
Employee retention creates less strain on company resources than the efforts it takes to onboard new hires. The SHRM survey found that companies strategically using benefits were more effective with employee retention (28% vs. 11%), and even saw higher employee performance than those that did not (58% vs. 34%). On-site yoga and massage are two wellness benefits companies can use as part of an employee retention strategy.
Massage helps employees manage work-related stress, which is a leading workplace problem. Massage lowers blood levels of cortisol, a hormone produced in the body due to stress, and increases production of serotonin, a hormone that decreases pain. Introducing regular exercise helps employees reduce the likelihood of developing diabetes, high blood pressure, angina pectoris (chest pain), and heart attack. These conditions are four of the ten most expensive health conditions for U.S. employers. Yoga is a fitness activity that is accessible for people at a wide range of athletic ability and can be tailored to target common work-related issues like neck and back pain.
